Peach Cobbler Gravel Bike Race

[Originally posted Last Week]

Many people, including me, say that Chilton County, Alabama peaches are the very best in the world. They will be in season a few months from now. My son and I competed in the Peach Cobbler gravel bike race this past weekend that took us all over the backroads of Chilton County on a beautiful day. My linked video lets you see some of the unique beauty of this special area just above the Appalachian Fall Line.

Chilton County peaches possess a unique, intense flavor and sweetness due to a combination of well-drained sandy loam soil, a high-ridge geography that protects orchards from late frosts, and a long, humid growing season. These peaches are often prized for being juicier and more aromatic than others. We enjoy them for breakfast, with homemade vanilla ice cream, and in amazing pies.

My race video starts with a song from the Allman Brothers 1972 album “Eat a Peach.”  It is followed by their iconic 1973 instrumental "Jessica." Their jam band version of Southern Rock blended with blues and jazz seemed to be a good choice to start the video. I apologize for the lack of image stabilization in the video on some of the bumpy roads!

Carefully choose where you live and work if you want to enjoy rides like this … and try some Chilton County peaches this summer!
