Thanks for a Great Adventure!

[Originally posted 27 January 2026] My last day with Carnival Corporation will be on Monday [2 February 2026]. It has been an amazing experience and adventure that I greatly enjoyed over the last eight years! I appreciate the opportunity I had to dive deep into the cruise industry and see the world along the way. It was a perfect marriage of my skills as a lawyer and professional engineer and my sense of adventure. I learned a lot along that voyage. You will never find employees who work harder than the crew members on a cruise or expedition ship. They work seven days a week for months on end away from family and they can solve complex problems. They are beyond amazing. As I traveled far and wide with my work, I learned that we all have more in common than we are different. Everyone needs someone to talk to. They want to tell you about their family, their fears, sometimes their loneliness, and their cultural background. They also want to be encouraged and have hope. The extent to which I was able to listen, learn, and provide encouragement to people from all over the world, I will consider my greatest career accomplishment. I learned more from them than they could ever learn from me.

During my time at Carnival I gained a thorough understanding of the complex environmental compliance challenges that cruise ships face. Unlike most of my colleagues, I had a non-maritime background. I had dealt with compliance, risk management, and governmental enforcement in the energy sector and also as a college professor. I had a unique perspective. I came with a different paradigm. A different set of lenses. We quickly learned that my outside view provided incredible value to Carnival. I was blessed to experience the full environmental compliance spectrum from top to the bottom: attending International Maritime Organization (IMO) MEPC meetings where international treaty requirements are adopted; to participating in Carnival working groups developing policies and procedures to implement international and domestic requirements; to spending time with deck and technical officers onboard our ships to understand the challenges of implementing those requirements. I gained considerable experience with voyage planning and execution using OneOcean, where legal requirements, ship operations, policies, and procedures all come together on the bridge of a ship to mitigate environmental compliance risks.

I will always be grateful to Carnival Corporation for these wonderful life changing experiences. What is next? Stay tuned! I am excited about the journey ahead.
